I love this time of year. Goal setting and self reflection are two of my favorite things to do!! As an entrepreneur, I think it is even more important!
I have learned from a mentor of mine, Bob Heilig, that there is a very important step that most people miss when starting to set their new upcoming goals. Missing these steps can ultimately lead to failure. I found this part particularly interesting, and wanted to share it because I know it has not been on my radar and perhaps it is something you didn’t know either!
Before tackling new 2020 goals, one must learn to close out and say goodbye to 2019, “completing our past” as he calls it. Most forget to do this and it’s one of the biggest reasons one fails in his/her new quest. 2019 may have been a stand out year for you, which is awesome. But for most, it may not have been. It is in examining the biggest disappointments of 2019 that set one up for his/her biggest opportunities of 2020.
So you might wonder how exactly we do that… it’s actually quite simple. Taking the time to answer these 4 questions.
1.) How would you grade your performance? Scale 1-10. 1 being awful, 10 amazing.
2.) What did you accomplish that you are most proud of? We must slow down and reflect on all we have done not just focus on what we didn’t do.
3.) What disappointments or regrets did you have in 2019? The point is to look at it through a new frame. It is in those strongest regrets that you will find the biggest opportunity for growth in 2020. The point is to focus on the lesson, not to dwell on the negativity or the past. But in focusing on the lesson, we can hope to rewrite our story for the upcoming year. Make those changes in order to not repeat the same mistakes
4.) What major lesson did you learn? Big ah ha moment. Greatest take away.
Hold yourself accountable to make those changes in the new year. Close the door of 2019, and start 2020 on the right foot. What big goals are you looking to tackle?! I am so excited for the upcoming year. I have big goals, and plans. I can’t wait to see what enfolds! Until next time.
Much love my friends,
Court
